Intro
If you look at a standard water pipe fitting, a “Tee” looks like a sharp 90-degree capital letter T. But if you take a look inside your home’s walls at the Drain-Waste-Vent (DWV) system, you’ll notice something unexpected: plumbing tees aren’t sharp 90-degree junctions at all! They feature a distinct, sweeping curve.
Customer Issue
A homeowner in Georgetown was undertaking a major layout remodel that required moving a bathroom wall. The main plumbing vent stack ran directly through the middle of the wall being removed. To relocate the vent pipe out of the way, the entire line had to be cut below the floor, re-routed through the framing, and connected back into the attic stack.
What We Did
Our team tackled this remodel plumbing project. They opened the floor section to access the lower drain connections, ran a new PVC stack up through the newly positioned interior wall, and navigated into the attic to splice back into the home’s main roof vent. Along the way, they installed proper Sanitary Tees and Wyes to maintain continuous airflow and gravity drainage.
Result
The vent stack was successfully hidden in the new wall footprint, completely out of sight, while maintaining 100% code-compliant airflow through the roof.
The Science Behind the Curve: Sanitary Tees vs. Standard Tees
Why aren’t DWV tees built with straight 90-degree angles? It comes down to gravity, low-pressure flow dynamics, and air balance:
–Protecting Flow Dynamics: In supply lines (like your hot and cold tap lines), water is under high pressure (40–60 PSI), so it easily turns sharp 90-degree corners. Drainage systems are powered entirely by gravity. A sharp 90-degree corner causes wastewater to smash against the back wall of the pipe, creating turbulence, splash-back, and severe clogs.
–The Sanitary Tee (San-Tee): DWV “tees” feature a gentle internal sweep. When water or air travels through the branch, the curve naturally directs the flow in the correct downward or upward direction without restriction.
–Venting Requirements: A drain and vent system relies on air pressure equalization to keep water moving smoothly and prevent sewer gases from entering your home. Sweeping curves prevent air pockets from choking the stack.
